WASC VISIT 2018
Welcome to my classroom, esteemed visitors!
Cultural activity: Playing "vitilla," a rudimentary form of street stick ball (Dominican Republic)
During our unit on the Dominican Republic, we read about the importance of baseball as both a diversion and a means of economic gains, fueling the baseball dreams of countless Dominican boys. We watched a documentary where 'vitilla' was demonstrated by very poor kids who lacked proper sporting supplies. As a culminating activity, we let off a little steam and played this cultural tradition on our very own campus!

Sample project:
Español 3 "TV news reports"
This was my first year attempting a Spanish 3 student-led project called "Canal 3" (Channel 3, named after Spanish 3, of course!)
Students spent weeks investigating stories of their choosing--from the band winter concert to a wrestling season preview to a new milk tea restaurant in the neighborhood, the project was a hit! The students seemed to enjoy having total say in their topic, and gave a great effort in mixing and matching verb tenses as needed. They used current and past vocabulary, but in many cases, needed to learn new vocabulary to accurately portray their stories to the class. Proficient work |

Sample project:
Español 1 "How-to" videos
To kick off the new semester, I tried something different in Spanish 1: "how to" videos for all the main topics we covered the first semester.
Topics were picked at random. Groups were 2-3 students, based on their seating configurations which, in my classes, are in threes, with the middle seat occupied by an "A" student who acts as a "leader" for the students to their left and right. The project was a hit. The students enjoyed using their phones to create their movies. Moving forward, by year's end I will have a series of videos I can show future classes. Proficient work |
